The name is different depending on your location or perception, but the product is basically the same.
They might come in 100mm square cubes or be as big as 250mm x 200mm x 250mm and be sandstone cobbles or granite cobbles but one thing is certain, they are on their way back! Whether cobbled driveways and paths or larger civic areas more and more developers and architects are being asked to use - or are suggesting cobbles instead of other less visually pleasing methods of construction.
It would be difficult to find another reclaimed stone product that looks as visually stunning and spectacular as a properly laid cobble driveway, cobble patio or cobble recreational area especially if the layer transforms the area by laying out the European fan or Florentine style.
Perhaps the most descriptive word for cobbles or setts is the 'Hovis' shape but there are various shapes and finishes – each giving a differing feel underfoot.
The smaller – usually 100 x 100 x 100 or 125 x 125 x 125 – are often described as 'cubes'and are invariably (but not always) granite and come in stunning colours such as pinks, reds, blues and greens.
With a 100 x 100 x 100 cube you will get approx 3 - 3.5 sq m coverage and around 300 cobbles per tonne.
Sandstone cobbles are also widely used to transform otherwise bland expanses into visually pleasing works of art. Cobbles can be enjoyed by generations to come and yet be tough enough to take the rigours of daily life whether on foot or by wheeled modes of transport.
Some of the cobbled areas covering the streets of Britain have seen over 200 years of activity yet still look good , the use of cobbles goes back to Roman times 1000's of years ago and beyond and they are still evident in most of the historic towns and cities in the British Isles.
